Wedding Photography and Film Trends for 2027

Trend lists are easy to write and hard to trust. So this one only includes things we have actually photographed and filmed, with the real weddings to prove it. If you are planning a 2027 wedding, here is what we keep seeing, and what we would steal if we were you.

The short version

Couples are skipping the expected. Dark and moody edits instead of pastels, proposals that are filmed like short movies, small weddings full of personality, winter and Christmas dates, black and white with real emotion in it and social clips that arrive the same weekend. The common thread: weddings that look like the people in them.

Trend 01Dark and moody, with pastels optional

Candlelight, deep colors and dramatic portraits after sunset are some of our favorite things to photograph right now. Maddy and Dan took it all the way: a Halloween wedding with a black lace gown, deep purple for the wedding party, guests in costume and lantern portraits in the woods at blue hour.

Make it yours: you don't need Halloween to go moody. Black with one strong accent color, lots of candles and a few minutes of portraits right after sunset will get you there.

Trend 02Proposals are being filmed, not just photographed

The proposal is becoming part of the wedding story. Chris surprised Bella with what she thought was a horseback riding promo shoot at Painted Bar Stables in the Finger Lakes, and the whole moment was photographed and filmed. That proposal later became the first chapter of their wedding film.

Make it yours: give your partner a believable reason for a camera to be there, and plan the proposal around the light.

Trend 03Smaller guest lists, bigger personality

Intimate weddings at small venues and private retreats let couples spend time with every guest and fill the day with details that are completely theirs. At The Mason Jar in Vernon, a venue listed for 30 to 90 guests, Jennifer and Jared said their vows under a white arbor at the end of a lantern-lined aisle. At Hidden Lake Resort, Trung and Korey wore matching white sneakers and cut a cake shaped like one.

Make it yours: a smaller guest list frees up time. Spend some of it on portraits.

Trend 04Winter and Christmas weddings

December weddings feel cozy in a way summer can't. Jill and Nick leaned in with a Christmas wedding at The Sinclair of Skaneateles: snow outside, greenery and candles inside, and an outdoor fireplace after dark.

Make it yours: choose a venue that is beautiful indoors and plan around the early sunset, which comes around 4:30 p.m. in December in Upstate New York.

Trend 05Black and white, with real emotion in it

Black and white keeps the focus on faces and feelings, and it never looks dated. We edited Duvens and Cassandre's Haitian church wedding story in warm black and white, from the vows to the happy tears on the dance floor.

Black and white keeps every eye on the two of you.

Make it yours: ask your photographer for a selection of black and white in your gallery, especially for the ceremony and the emotional moments.

Trend 06Social clips the same weekend

Some couples want to share their wedding while it is still fresh, without waiting for the film. For them, we offer a wedding content creator who captures vertical, social-first clips and delivers them within about 48 hours, while your filmmakers focus on the wedding film.

Make it yours: if posting matters to you, plan for it. If it doesn't, your highlight film will still be worth the wait.

TimelessWhat never goes out of style

Trends are fun, but the photos you will love in thirty years are the same ones couples have always loved: real laughter, good light, the people who matter and a team that knows when to step in and when to stay out of the way. Pick the trends that feel like you, and skip the ones that don't.

FAQCommon questions

What wedding photography styles are popular for 2027?

Across our own weddings, couples keep choosing dark and moody edits, more black and white, filmed proposals, small weddings full of personal details and winter and Christmas dates.

Will our wedding photos look dated in ten years?

Decor and fashion date faster than good light and real emotion. Choose a photographer whose editing looks natural to you, and ask for a mix of color and black and white.

Can we get clips for social media right after the wedding?

Yes. Add a wedding content creator and you will receive vertical, social-first clips within about 48 hours.

Do you film proposals and engagement sessions?

Yes. We offer engagement photography and video, including surprise proposals like Chris and Bella's.
